About Long Point
Long Point Wealth Management was founded on a simple conviction: independent advisors should deliver the same depth of research and risk management as the largest institutions, without the bureaucracy, the conflicts, or the one-size-fits-all approach.
The firm is named for Long Point, the narrow spit of land that forms the tip of Cape Cod and shelters Provincetown Harbor. It is the calm water behind the point that holds steady when the seas outside turn rough. That is what we try to be for the wealth a family has built: a refuge from the volatility outside, and the preservation of what matters when the world gets loud.
Mark Schiffenhaus, CFP®
Mark's career in markets began on a trading floor. After earning his degree from Boston University in 1988 and spending a first chapter in his family's manufacturing business, he followed his interest in investments to San Francisco in 1992 and took a position on the floor of the Pacific Options Exchange. He later moved to New York and spent roughly a decade as an independent options market maker on the American Stock Exchange.
That decade is where this firm's approach to risk comes from. A market maker does not get to hold an opinion and wait. Positions are managed continuously, with real money at stake, and the discipline of sizing risk deliberately becomes second nature. It is a very different education from the one most advisors receive.
He then moved from trading to advising, building a financial planning and investment management practice, first at UBS and, from 2010, at Detwiler Fenton, a Boston boutique broker-dealer and wealth management firm. In 2017 he founded Long Point Wealth Management, initially in partnership with Cantella & Company, and in June 2021 opened the practice as an independent Registered Investment Advisor.
As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional, Mark holds himself to a fiduciary standard. He manages client portfolios directly, conducts his own fundamental research rather than reselling third-party commentary, and builds the analytical tools the firm uses every day. There is no separation between the person making investment decisions and the person responsible for your financial well-being.
Mark's approach is rooted in healthy skepticism. He doesn't follow consensus for comfort, doesn't chase headlines, and doesn't confuse activity with progress. When markets are euphoric, he asks what's being overlooked. When markets are fearful, he looks for opportunity. The goal is never to predict, it's to prepare.
Mark and his wife, Ann, live on Cape Cod. Away from the office he spends time with family, enjoys surfing, pickleball, and gardening, and has volunteered as a youth lacrosse coach. These days he travels with his youngest son, who plays travel hockey and lacrosse.
